Hello everyone,
I'm Shanti Duncan, Ph.D., a therapist specializing in trauma and sexual behavior problems. It's quite an experience when casual conversations take a deep turn upon mentioning my profession. But beyond the initial awkwardness, there's a world of profound impact and rewarding experiences in this field.
Working with individuals who have experienced trauma or have sexual behavior problems is a journey into deep, rich therapeutic relationships. This field offers the unique chance to disrupt long-standing patterns of abuse and dysfunction, providing a pathway to healing and prevention of future traumas.
The term "sex offender" carries heavy stigma and often elicits strong, negative reactions. Understandingly, the idea of working closely with individuals who have committed sex crimes can be daunting. When I first entered this field, I was met with concerns for my safety and sanity. Even my mother, out of concern, sent me a canister of mace. But in over twenty years of working in this area, I've never felt in danger.
Language shapes perception. In my earlier days, I learned this firsthand. Initially, when discussing my work, I used terms like "juvenile sex offenders." This sparked extreme reactions. However, when I started referring to my clients as "youth with sexual behavior problems," the responses became more understanding and supportive. This shift in language reflects a more compassionate and accurate view of these individuals, especially the youth who are still developing.
A common myth is that individuals who commit sex crimes are beyond help. However, this is far from the truth. Research shows that with proper treatment, the majority of these clients can and do change, with recidivism rates being relatively low. This challenges the notion of irreparable damage and highlights the potential for transformation.
Stereotypes about sex crimes are pervasive and often inaccurate. For example, contrary to some beliefs, both males and females can and do commit sex crimes. Such misconceptions can be hard to dispel, even with factual information.
My career has been a journey of learning and adapting. Good mentorship and staying informed about the latest research have been key to my success as a therapist. This field, while challenging, offers the opportunity to witness significant positive changes in individuals and families.
Ultimately, my work is about making a difference. It's about prevention, healing, and contributing to breaking cycles of abuse. Each successful intervention not only helps the individual but also has the potential to protect future generations.
My book, "Treatment for Youth with Sexual Behavior Problems," aims to be a resource for professionals in this field. It's intended to guide therapists, probation officers, and others in identifying and implementing effective treatment strategies, and hopefully, it will offer insights for more meaningful and less awkward conversations about this crucial work.
Remember, the power of change lies within our understanding, compassion, and willingness to engage in difficult conversations and work.
Warm regards,
Shanti Duncan, Ph.D.
